I must be missing something here. If the Trek has the original bars, what has the stem got to do with upgrading to integrated shifters? The grip diameter of drop bars has not changed in a long long time.
You could use a quill adpater to change to a threadless stem, but there's no particular advantage to it apart from a wider choice of stems.
