I never had problems with using black electircal tape at the stem because the tape matches or works well my bikes which were all grey, black and white. Anyway, if you have to match a cerain primary colored bike, there are electrical tapes of different colrs available.

I like it - and will give it a try. I haven't wrapped stem first until this recent job so I haven't had to deal with it slipping on me, but come to think of it I have seen it on a couple bikes I've bought. I'm curious though -while I realize your focus is more on function than esthetics (which I support...), doesn't it look odd having the tape overlap in both directions?
