I think that's a pretty apt comparison, something I came up with as well. I can shift a friction shift, but I will admit that the bikes I have that have friction shifters are low end, and my tendency is to be a sloppy shifter with friction. I'll see if the indexing makes things any better. I currently have one bike that's SS, two that have friction shifters and three that are indexed (a modern 21-speed hybrid, the 12-speed Prelude I just converted back to indexed, and an old Raleigh 3-speed with a SA AW hub).
