Lock ring issue is real hard for anyone, I think. For one, it's darn scary to do. You are gonna put a lot of power onto that thin ring held on by a tiny notch on it. And at the same time, you can't over-tighten the thing, too. I just make sure I don't get carried away and pound on it with all my weight (160-70 lb). (Which is kinda hard to do for me, also. My Surly lockring is working but deformed now, I am a shumack.)

Where does it hurt? Hamstrings? Quads? Shins? Feet? Knees? For me, skidding practices never caused me that much troubles. But then skidding isn't all I do. I primarily "ride" on my bike. And, I had to ride a few min to get to places where I can skid. I think he should warm up before going into skidding practices.
