There is a link to the recall notice in my previous post. It talks about how to determine if a crank is recalled and what to do if it is. I think they are still honoring it (at least they did for me about a year ago).

In my case, someone pointed it out to me just before Christmas 2008, so I didn't ride the bike anymore until after it was fixed. My LBS is fairly new and had never gotten certification as a Shimano dealer. I told them I could wait and it ended up taking almost 3 months for them to get certified (lots o' paperwork). In the meantime, I commuted on the Dumpster Queen.
