I have no idea just what the level of subsidy is for the current airline industry, but they obviously have a model that isn't working well and it will be just a matter of time before a few more of the legacy carriers go bankrupt and the industry contracts even more. Currently the service is deteriorating as well as their ability to provide any type of flights from many airports. Every year it gets harder and harder to get flights to and from many areas, without having to drive an hour or more to a larger airport.

We already cannot afford to maintain nor subsidize the current road system without some changes in the way the raise the revenue to pay for it. I have noticed a serious decline in the condition of some of the more heavily traveled roads near my home, when I questioned the local DOT engineer about it, her comment was that their funding had been cut...again and they were just trying to keep them from totally destructing. I have also read several articles where some states are allowing roads to go back to gravel from pavement to save on maintenance costs.

Even if you are correct our system doesn’t respond to that kind of change well. Railroads are viewed with skepticism because of how poorly they have been run in the past and we do have a “been there done that” national attitude. We have lobbies already in place for airlines, and aircraft manufacturers. But even if you could jump that hurdle you have to convince the voters that they should dig into their pockets to help fund another several trillion dollar project. We are still hurting from the Wall Street bail out and the bank bail out with nothing to show for it but rich bankers and Wall Street executives.
All I am saying is I don’t believe there is a snow man’s chance in death valley in the summer that anyone will convince most of the People in the US that they should get out of the isolation of their cars and into the seat next to a stranger. And if you can’t convince the voters then there are no politicians with the nerve to chance getting kicked out of office to push such an idea through.
My personal prediction is if the people in the US are willing to fight National Healthcare tooth and nail they will fight a National railway program even harder. Just how I see it.
