I think they are going to do very well with this setup. It is targeted for people that would buy a triple as a first bike. If you have ever ridden with those type of people (read "C group bike club ride leader") then you will realize that they have a habit of getting on one ring and staying there. Most rarely shift the front. Big gearing jumps will not be a problem for most, and like others have said, it is a simple matter of changing the cassette later if they want tighter jumps.
