As an after work rider, here in AZ, at least part of my daily road bike ride is in semi darkness. And, when we move into summer, my rides will get later to avoid that last edge of solar heat.

I have also been riding more often after dark. And, now that I'm properly lite (MagicShine and Bike Planet clone) finding that it can be a great time to ride, including to the ends of unlite suburban boulevards, through tech and business parks and spinning around the local airport.

While I choose road bikes by day, at night I find that a cyclocross bike, with either cross or urban tires is the best choice. The additional stability sooths my concerns about unseen hazards. As a result, I keep my riding exertion at more of a day time road bike level.
