Surly Lockring - Direction

So this question may be stupid, but I have an unsymmetric Surly lockring and am wondering what direction it goes on. One end has a smaller shoulder than the other. The larger end has the divets for use of a lockring tool. This isn't the one on Surly's website now. Does the larger or smaller end lay flat with the cog? The "Surly" logo shows when the smaller end if pressing against the cog, but it seems more intuitive to have the larger end with the divets for the lockring tool against it for ease of installation/removal.

Make fun of me as you may, provided you let me know what's right.
