Back to the Future

When I started this new hobby of restoring vintage Raleigh's, my first bike was a 1972 Raleigh Sprite. It was in sorry shape, but it was a fun learning experience. I replaced the rear deraulleur which was bent to hell, a Huret Alvit, with a derailleur I found on ebay. It wasn't a Huret Alvit (or Huret of any kind), but it works fine. In the meantime, I've restored 5 bikes. Recently I turned by attention back to the Sprite. I want to go back to the original equipment derailleur. I have found several on ebay. My question is, are these derailleurs a "one size fits all" piece of equipment, or is there one for a 3-speed and another for a 5-speed, etc. Yes, I know about the problem of cable breaking with this particular derailleur, but I'm going for original equipment in spite of it.
