Last Fall, Bicycles for Humanity in Thunder Bay held a Vintage Bicycle Yard Sale at Lakehead University. The sale lasted about six hours. We were selling vintage road bikes, converted Single Speeds and Roadsters for roughly fifty dollars each. And the bikes were all rebuilt. We sold out in no time and plan to take 100 bikes to the sale next Fall. And I learned a thing or two at that sale...

Non-collectors do not look for the same things that we do. Dual position levers are a selling feature (quite frankly, I like them myself for around town use if they and the wheels are set up properly). The young university student could care less if a Free Spirit is an entry level, department store offering or top of the line racer. The selling features for that transaction were shiny, bright and it is a Free Spirit, just like the girl who bought it described herself.
