Alan makes a good point... if the frame spacing is too narrow for your wheels you won't be able to use the rear unless you get it laced to a hub that fits.

This is a big plus for steel frames.

My Trek is 135 mm in the rear and many touring bikes use the wider dropout spacing to accommodate mtb hubs instead of road hubs.
