I really like the Huret drailuers on my Gitane, a lot. Keeping with the "why on earth did they do that" theme; My TdF has an odd gear cable arrangement. Rather than a traditional giude clamped on the seat tube or brazed to the bottom bracket, it has a clamp-on (Simplex) cam with one cable comming from the down tube shift lever, and then another cable starting at the cam to go to the rear dearailuer. It is almost like they were incapible of finding cables longer than three feet long.

That's a demultiplicator relay you're talking about. It's used with the Simplex bar end shifters to decrease the amount of cable pull at the rear derailer. It's essential that it be usaed with those shifters because of their large diameter barrels. The fact that you don't understand it doesn't necessarily make it a bad design.
