It's very typical for mountain stages to have small groups in the front. You'll see that everywhere, not just in the tdf.
Sounds like you didn't follow (to the detail) last year's TDF. Anyway, I think it was Stage 17 (?) where F. Landis led an incredible fast tempo, not allowing anybody to attack. He pretty much desintegrated the pack and only 5 stayed, the strongest, (Lance, Ulrich, Kloden, Basso and of course Floyd) by 3 or 5 miles to go, Lance wanted Floy to win the stage as a payment for such a fine job, but Ulrich won't let him, at the end KJloden tried to steal the show, but something clicked on Lance (I think he got pissed that Floyd was denied) and he decided that if it's not gonna be Floyd, then it might as well be him, and he beat Kloden to the line. It was awesome!
