Nice bike. A friend of mine has the 2009 Specialized Hardrock, put some slicks on it and it's turned out to be a perfect commuter.
My bikes:
Late 90's GT Palamar. 21 speeds, Schwalbe City Jet Tires, Halfords (crap overpriced) mud guards. It's a very heavy bike. I mainly keep it as a spare or for when I have leave my bike in rough areas (there are lots in South Yorkshire).
Mid 90's Ridgeback 601GS. 6 speed freewheel, City Jet Tires, Axiom Rack, Agu Yamasha Pack which has handy fold out side bags and can also unzip to extend upwards.
Next to fit some Marathon Plus Tires. I still get the odd puncture with the City Jet's and I hate changing flats.
