Really? Because I have to travel quite a ways to get to roads with more than one lane in each direction. Excluding the expressway about 7 miles away, I don't think there are any within 30 miles of me. I'm sure that the VAST, VAST majority of roads in Michigan are one lane in each direction. Sure, when you get inside larger cities many of the roads have two lanes in each direction, but that's a small fraction of the roads. Personally I don't think I drive or ride on a road with 2 lanes in each direction more than once a month or so.
Ahh..the highlighted section shows my error in perspective, sorry. That is where I have always lived...semi rural areas with moderate sized cities scattered about. But my error shouldn't be as significant as it appears. I am sure when ya consider residential (non commercial) streets the vast majority are one lane. That is certainly true where I live. But any street really
designed to get people from point A to point B with any degree of precision is two lanes..usually a state/federal road with local responsibility inside the city limits. Using US route 20 here as an example, it is two lanes both ways in all areas where traffic is heavy enough to warrant it...and one lane each way in rural areas where it can be, and where motorists are expected to be courteous enough to help allow passing if it is necesssary and safe to do. And on these roads the shoulders are pretty decent as well.
