You must tighten them in the correct pattern or your entire bicycle will fall apart. Then it will melt.
(Just make sure you tighten them all. It doesn't matter how.)
I didn't do it before (LBS did, after I couldn't figure out the creak/tick). I was going to go ahead and tighten them as you do 5-bolt car tires, in the star pattern.
