I remember when, almost 20 years ago, I was in early transition from a keen runner to a keen cyclist (and had just bought my Specialized Sirrus Triple, lugged steel fast tourer, still my 'go to' bike for comfy miles)
Bicycling magazine featured a 'how to clean your bike like a pro-tour mechanic'. I wonder if that lurks somewhere on the cyberweb?
As far as I recall, the main things were
One bucket for greasy things, one bucket for painted things, one set of scrubbers and rubbers for each, don't mix
Wheels off, spray with citrus cleaner/degreaser, especially on cassette, leave to drip over newspaper with the rear wheel cassette on the inside leant against a wall so the drippings are clear of the rims
Car shampoo or equivalent, wash mitt for all the painted bits, rinse often, lots of fresh water.
Back to the greasy bits - agitate the degreaser with a short bristle paint brush, and rinse with clean water
Reassemble. Dry off with clean rags or towels, and lube rotating bits and wipe off the excess.
Finish with furniture polish and buff off!
The magazine said that about 15 minutes per bike for a team mechanic with 10 to do was a good evening's work!
