Why are tires so expensive?

Decent tires are the price of cheap car tires-what's the deal? There's lots of competition, the material cost seems to be fairly low. Marketing costs are probably high, trying to sell us on the latest silliness. I guess engineering costs could be higher due to higher pressure and the need to handle that, but then shouldn't mountain bike tires be cheaper? Similarly, it seems as though the need to engineer car tires to withstanding 30,000+ high-speed miles would be equally resource-consuming. So that leaves us with low volume of sales, and simply what the market will bear. Anyone have better ideas?
