Back in the eighties, I rode Trimet in Portland, Oregon regularly before I started to bike commute to work & school on a Raleigh Sports 3 speed. Just counting travel time, I could beat the bus by about 5 minutes over my 5.5 mile commute into downtown due to its many stops. The express bus was a bit faster than my bike but ran infrequently. Factor in the normal 10 min wait, overcrowding, drunks, crazies etc. I chose the bike commute. When they got the light rail operating, it was faster than the bike but also over crowded to the point of standing room only from where I lived & worked so I just continued to bike. Don
