Hmm, with friction shifting I don't think that's a too big of a deal. I have a Shimano 7 speed freewheel and it works great with the Suntour RD. I knew guys who had Shimano downtube shifters with Suntour driveline. I knew guys who had Shimano front derailleur combined with Suntour rear...you get the picture? I knew a lot of guys that had various combinations of components. Granted, this was in the day of friction shifting, I think the problem would exist if you moved into the world of index.
