Yup, the waking up early thing does happen but only when your ready to race (in my limited experience).

As for timing, well you've just got to manage it so that the missus doesn't think you're a ravin loon and call in the divorce lawyers. Results on race day help in this regard, but results are always eroded 5:1 by any training ride that inconveniences her.
