The SRF5 has to be the most underrated hub out there. I was not happy with the Nexus 7 at all and if the 8 speed requires extensive mods, why not try the 5 speed. I have a Dahon in 5 speed and set it up so most of my riding is in 4th. Therefore giving me three low gears and 1st being very low! In fact, I can climb a mountain in that gear! I was surprised when you set up the 5 speed in this manner because I can't imagine the 8 speed having a lower gear. My 1st gear feels lower than my touring bike. Even though I have one high gear, I'm fine with this because it's actually too high and I hardly use it.
