Did you know you can drive around with only 3/4 or 4/5 bolts holding the wheels on your car as a temporary measure until you get to a service station? same deal with chainring bolts.
I have broken chainring bolts and lost a wheel off my car once doing just that! Fortunately nobody was killed either time. Losing the car wheel was far more spectacular.
