All the talk about EPO and dehydration is funny. Once upon a time, it was thought that training actually decreased the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood because samples showed a slightly lower concentration of RBC's. The problem is that they weren't taking into account the increase in blood plasma volume, which is another adaptation to endurance exercise, and helps maximize stroke volume and decrease cardiac drift. The absolute concentration of RBC's might have been lower, but the total blood volume x the concentration gives you more circulating RBC's.
