I think the its more like standing outside the club smoking a cigarette, and having some random guy from the street walk up to you and say 'nice gay club'. There's nothing wrong with being gay or being in a gay club, but the possibility that 'gay' was an insult would make the conversation uncomfortable.

I don't get it.
Its context:
"Nice colorful Lance Armstrong bike- I should look into getting one someday and selling my car, I'd be a lot healthier that way"
"Nice colorful Lance Armstrong bike- next time I see you ******s in your tight clothes riding in a group taking up the whole lane, I'm gonna run you off the road!"
