I think the its more like standing outside the club smoking a cigarette, and having some random guy from the street walk up to you and say 'nice
gay club'. There's nothing wrong with being gay or being in a gay club, but the possibility that 'gay' was an insult would make the conversation uncomfortable.

"Nice colorful Lance Armstrong bike- I should look into getting one someday and selling my car, I'd be a lot healthier that way"
