It's really not that easy. Issues like this never are...which is why they engender so much debate. There is a legitamate concern about having to pay for other people's irresponsible decisions when society has decided to bail them out on the other end. I resent having to pay for someone with lung cancer who smoked their entire lives and doesn't have health insurance...since society is providing some level of health care, his decision DOES effect me...and I (society at large) should get a say if we're paying. On the other hand, we can't realistically legislate health and all personal decisions.
I don't know what the answer is...my gut says that there are negatives and flaws in any society and I tend to come down on the personal liberties side of the fence. I think in the long run I'd rather pay for idiocy than put such personal decisions in the political arena. However, to dismiss legitamate concerns about funding other people's bad choices is also wrong. It's not really freedom when other people are paying for that person's stupidity.
