I've only really been riding since July and have not ridden in groups much. Even if my fitness was reasonable (which it's probably not), I need to spend some time in fast group settings before I'd be comfortable to race.
I'm at 183lbs with 228ftp right now. My plan for the summer is to drop another 10 pounds, get my FTP up to around 250, and then start working on my higher power levels/shorter intervals.
I need to find some group rides to work on my skills. I was going to one last year, but it usually ended up more as a social thing of 4-8 people (fun, but I wasn't learning much or being pushed too hard).
It sounds like power alone is not a good judge of ability to hang in a race or not, but I'd just like to make sure I'm in the general ball park.
If you have the power data, plug it into WKO+ and see where you come out (in the e-wang/power profile chart)..
It's not exact, or perfect, but is a rough indicator of your fitness in relation to the categories. For instance of you don't have any vertical bars in one area (5-sec, 1-min, 5-min, FTP), there's your weakness.
