I like this part:

"the backpack was filled with clothing and it appeared he'd been travelling. Police have yet to determine why the wanderer was over 1,300 kilometres from his home state."

Most of the people I know have the same reaction to bicycle touring. It's just not considered a rational thing to do, so clearly there must be something off with you.
