After living in Northern Ontario all my life I have seen many methods used to scare bears away and I suppose that some of them will work with dogs as well. The one that is very popular these days is called a Bear-Banger and it is like a little gun, in the shape of a pen or very small flashlight, that you carry with a charge in it which lets off a huge bang when fired. There is no discharge from the gun itself just the noise. There is an add on feature which releases some type of flare which goes out about 30 feet and creates a very large flash of light which is quite exciting. Some people are using them for fireworks displays at the cottage. They seem to be very effective and I suppose you could likely use it on idiot motorists as well!
