I ride to work about 150 days per year (and take public transit the rest) and I am pretty visible. Almost every day someone comments on my cycling. I don't preach that they should bike, but occasionally people say they may give it a try, and if they ask for advice I give it.
When I first starting commuting, I worked with an individual who had been doing it a while. What seemed like a wild idea on my part, suddenly seemed do-able. I did get quite a lot of useful information from him, but his example was the real teacher for me.
We should never forget the importance of the example we provide.
