1mm?!!! I don't actually measure the gap, but I will always try to get it within. When there is no visible wobble I'm happy. Not visible must mean it is within 1mm. I'm not too worried about lateral, it's the radial that botters me, I can feel that on the road. Plus I'm obsessed with building and riding a perfectly round wheel. Broke a spoke yesterday when trying to true a wheel. I'm on the verge of getting discouraged. I am currently unemployed and looking at going for a job at my LBS as a summer job just to get by. I am not extremely technical, but I really enjoy repairing bikes and think I can say I have some tool skills. So wheelbuilding and truing has become something of an obsession. Maybe I am just in the 'over-focussing zone' where things tend to get worse rather than better....
