Learning the skill varies from person to person. My Lovely Wife™ had a heck of a time and won't use them again. She isn't even strong enough to twist her foot out reliably, even with the tension set to minimum. She has small bones and muscles in her limbs. Also, she's not good at balancing at low speed. She can't climb steep hills on the bike, not because she's not strong enough but because she can't balance.
