Did the calculation - surprised myself with savings from bike commute
Commuting by bike saved me how much money?
I was just thinking about it and running the sums through my head, but I'm completely shocked at the result. Let me go through it for you and see what you think.
*For your reference, I live and work in Hong Kong. I don't have a car (why TF would you want one?). Public transport here is excellent (train, bus, tram, cab).
It is not far to work, but the climate here can suck and it is always nice not to walk. Options are a cab (HK$30 - US$3.90) or a bus (HK$8 - US$1). Occasionally I need to duck out from work to pick something, so that would likely be a cab ride. Riding is nicer than walking in that I don't sweat as much because of the cooling of the breeze as you move.
I got an old road bike for free and converted it to single speed. With some repairs and improvements (and the single speed parts like a tension arm), the whole thing cost about HK$1700 (US$220) about two years ago.
The Calculation:
Let's just say I'm saving myself at least HK$250 (US$32) a week by riding to and from work as well as running an errand or two. Call it 48 weeks a year, so this is HK$12,000 (US$1,500). I'm probably being conservative.
The office is not far, but is very direct by bike. Other methods of transport take longer routes or require some walking. The ride is 2km and I'm doing about 50-80km a month just on the commuting bike.
The Verdict:
While I'm not going to retire on that money, it was a surprising figure and I also get to have fun terrorising the poor drivers (bless the simple folks) in this town.
