You just need a cotton buffing wheel and an arbor. I do all of my polishing with a large drill press. I don't use Mother's. I using buffing compounds. Tripoli and rouge.
Oh sure, but I'll always have the Mothers for hand work and when I
want to do the hand work (because it is a relaxing, calming activity for me). But sometimes I don't have a lot of time or just want to blow through something and this fits the bill.
