Delta's actually work very well with slightly wider tires, even to remove the wheel. You do need the correct levers however that have a sliding rod Q/R mechanism. Delta brakes also tend to work better with slightly wider rims and not the very narrow ones. I set my brakes up in such a way that the levers get as close to touching the handlebars as possible without actually touching when bottomed out. You can then get good leverage with two fingers.
