Fedex and UPS have something of a reputation for demanding "Customs charges" etc. before delivery but they usually back down when queried (or so I'm told).
Maybe you should send it to Britain, then post from there to Oz...a British based retailer sends complete bikes in a box to Oz for $AUD107.
No offence to you or other Australians but I never listen to customers in the receiving country in regards to shipping charges. Canadians, Japanese, Australians, green Martians. Never. They all know shipping expensive and they all give a song and a dance.
