On my hub, part of the mount for the cable snapped off because the brilliant Shimano engineers decided to make it out of plastic. Maybe yours has broken as well? It should stay in pretty snugly if the mount is still in one piece. Luckily I was able to crazy glue the piece back on and it has since stayed put.
