Are you asking about cutting the steerer tube or the head tube? The steerer tube is part of the fork; the head tube is part of the frame. Anyway, yes, I think it's worth trying. I don't know what might go wrong, but I imagine something could go wrong, and you'd end up with a useless bike. But it is something I might try, so I recommend trying it.
