I think you meant "US shipping charges to Australia". Australia Post charges to the US are lower than USPS or Fedex,UPS etc.
European charges are even lower.
Mostly, I think the difference is down to the exchange rates. Check out the Wiggle link...$AUD100 to post (Through British Postal service)a complete bike to Australia and it will arrive in a week or so. I waited 3 weeks to get a parcel from the States (and I paid the highest rate for it) and the quickest I've ever had a parcel from the USA was 2 weeks. Usually, it's about 6 weeks by Surface Mail. The longest I've ever had to wait for a parcel from Europe was 10 days (and the postage was around %20 of the same item from the USA.
Don't blame us for the shortcomings of your postal/shipping services.
