I think subsidies should be explicit, not hidden as it is with the road system. It's fairly obvious to me that the huge subsidy we give the trucking industry takes freight away from the rail system, just as one example. So taxing trucking more equitably might not increase the price of goods at all. Either way, the costs should be borne by the people who are benefiting. Pennsylvania is dying to toll interstate 80, when a gas tax increase would raise significant funds without the dead loss of the collection system. The PA turnpike commission is a dead loss of significant proportions; Pennsylvania wants to sell the turnpike just to get rid of the commission.
