I'd say give up. That's what I've done. My GFs bike now adorns the harder-to-access top hanger on the wall where it looks great and is a constant reminder that I should not push her to do things she isn't pushing to do herself. $1000 is a small price to pay to learn this valuable lesson. Consider yourself fortunate.
