I had to make some adjustments to my commute after the first day. Kept getting buzzed by cars while attempting to turn left, not at a light, even with a kid trailer in tow.
After making some adjustments to my route I'm much more comfortable hauling the kids in the trailer to daycare. There is a main drag ( 40mph, 2 lanes in both directions, no turning lane, and a shoulder only on one side ) that I must travel to and from for maybe .2 miles. Thankfully the shoulder is on the side with our street. So I end up going right onto the main drag up to a crosswalk and then into the university. On the way home I cut through a different side street that intersects the main drag at a light up a ways, it's a left turn at a light onto the wide shoulder and just a short trip up to our street.
All in all my commute is a little more than 2 miles each way including a stop at daycare. It's enjoyable for all, my 3yo has started asking to take the bike to school ( ya, she doesn't have to pedal yet ).
