I've posted this before: Miguel Indurain won the field sprint for second place in the '93 Worlds using downtube shifters (the one where Lance won on a solo breakaway). Indurain beat several known sprinters who were using STI and Ergo. That should be proof that using downtube shifters are more about the rider than the equipment.
