I used to wake up at 3:45 in the morning to go riding. Ever since the beginning of 2002, my commute has been 36 miles RT or more. That solved the problem.

If I lost my commute, I'd go for some trainer action. If you only have an hour or so, you get a more focused workout than a real ride. It could be argued that trainers are boring, but I've done some routes literally thousands of times and nothing is boring if you are in sufficient pain. It's a routine no matter how you look at it.
