Nothing you do to the rear derailleur will cause or cure what's happening on the chainrings.
First check that the chainrings run true, or at least within 1-2mm of true. If so check the position of the FD making sure it's parallel to the cage, as it might have been dislodged in transit. Next check the outer limit screw and take the FD through a few shifts to make sure it shifts and trims properly using various rear sprockets to check all conditions. In other words, do a full FD diagnostic.
Those are the basics, and since this is a sudden transport related issue we can stop there, discounting chainring wear, or the like. But there is one other possibility that would be transit related and it's bad news. This is only a possibility, so keep some perspective, but maybe the rear triangle was pushed to the right (was the box OK) causing chainline issues among other things. Test for basic alignment as follows, you'll need light string, heavy thread, or dental floss and a ruler.
Open the QR and wind a few turns of string around the skewer so it won't slip, then lead it around the headtube and back under the skewer on the other side. Tension it and close the QR to trap it evenly on both sides forming a long triangle. Measure from the string straight across to the seat tube from both sides. Hopefully it's equal, if not you have a problem and need to see a decent shop to solve it.
