Also when I wear my HRM on my wrist instead of my bike, I rarely get a chance to look at it because I have to turn my wrist, which means I have to switch hand positions.

Get the strap, plan to put the watch on your bike and if there's an affordable option to get one that's coded do that, especially if you ride in groups.
