I used to use a ~20-mile one-way route with a section like Paul described, plus smaller 2-lane ~35-40mph highway and some urban stuff at each end. Like he says, the intersections on the highway call for good situational awareness, but the rest was quite mellow. I do suggest investing in good rear lights so you're easy to pick out from long range (DiNotte 140 in 5-pulse flashing mode is great, if you can afford it), and an ANSI Class II reflective vest and reflective legbands would also be helpful.
