I just finished installing a NOS Sturmey Archer S5-2 Alloy hub on my old Kona cruiser.
This is one of the old dual shift cable 5 speed SA hubs. Definitely NOS as it came in the original box and there was no sign at the spoke flange holes of it ever having been built into a wheel until I did so.
It is working fine but the shift pattern does not match the S5-2 documentation that I have downloaded.

The highest and lowest gears are selected with the left cable untensioned while the documents indicate that these should be selected when the cable is tensioned and the indicator rod pulled out.
Did SA change the shift pattern on late production S5-2 hubs or could the sliding center pinion controlled by the left shift cable be installed reversed? I would think that the latter would be impossible.
