My question was based on the description of shifting the S5 on Sheldon's web site and it does not clearly differentiate between the S5 and the later S5-1 and S5-2 hubs. The SA tech manual I downloaded describes the S5-2 shifting by shift lever positions rather than cable position which would be clearer for those using non standard shifters as I am.

That said, the only variable is the left-hand lever. A bell-crank variant of the S5 will operate reverse to those using a pull chain. If your shifting sequence is off, reverse the positioning of the left lever that is shown in the manual; should give you the proper sequence.
